The VALOR Survive and Thrive course is comprehensive training that enhances law enforcement officer safety by addressing topics that focus on emerging threats and challenges that officers routinely face in the line of duty. Topics explore concepts such as the safety mindset, professionalism and preparedness, identifying concealed weapons, and pre-incident indicators of and surviving a potential assault. Other topics include recognizing and defusing/de-escalating dangerous situations, implementing casualty care and rescue-training tactics, and implementing professional policing and balancing the roles of scholar, communicator, and protector. Additional topics stress the importance of protecting and improving the physical and mental health and well-being of law enforcement officers and, consequently, the communities they serve. Lastly, select instructors offer their firsthand accounts of surviving armed encounters. These motivating presentations tie all the previous topics and concepts together. The course ends with a challenge to all participants to take the information they have learned and apply it to their lives, both on and off duty.
